Ed Davey on the exodus of Tory members

Excerpt: Asked to comment on the apparent exodus of Tory members at a press conference in Blackpool this morning, Ed Davey MP said "this is in line with the reaction we had on the doorstep in Bromley. Many conservative members and traditional supporters are telling us that they no longer know what their party stands for. They are obviously disillusioned, and I don't find these figures surprising."

Asked to comment on the apparent exodus of Tory members at a press conference in Blackpool this morning, Ed Davey MP said "this is in line with the reaction we had on the doorstep in Bromley. Many conservative members and traditional supporters are telling us that they no longer know what their party stands for. They are obviously disillusioned, and I don't find these figures surprising."

If there is a surprise, it is the contrast with the message David Cameron has been putting out. According to 24dash.com

Mr Cameron insisted he had been bringing in thousands of new Tory members when he marked his first 100 days as leader in March.

He said in an interview with GMTV: "We have added 20,000 new members, we have been winning council by-elections, we have brought people into the party."

But these figures suggest that the Conservative Party has lost 6295 members over the last year.

So David Cameron might be spinning or ... *gulp* lying?

Next you'll be telling me that he's a unprincipled, right-wing media tart with a face that looks like the melted head of a waxwork pig.

I suspect the 6295 is a net figure while the 20,000 could be a gross increase, excluding leavers. i.e 20,000 new members joined, but 26295 left in the same period. Could be that - it is an old trick.

Indeed Paul, its all about churn.

No doubt Comrade Cameron learned all about it during his tenure at OnDigital.

Is this not just member demographics? I'm sure DC secretly believes that each 20-39yo is equal to two of each 60+.
