In the words of Tebbit: Cameron is to blame.
The BBC has a quotes page on the by-election results.

The most interesting words come from a former Conservative Party chairman
"I am in complete agreement with the successful Independent candidate at Blaenau Gwent who said that the parties must listen to the people and if they don't it will be the worse for them. That comment applies to both by-elections. The Liberal Democrats must be congratulating themselves on selecting a leader of experience and maturity," Ex-Conservative chairman Lord Tebbit
So praise for Ming - but the real target of Tebbit's words are his tarnished leader.

It is interesting that Tebbit speaks highly of Ming. I always remember that the late Sir John Junor also spoke very highly of Ming. Despite all the hilarity aimed at Ming by Dead Ringers etc, It may just be that he was a vote-winner in Bromley and Chiselhurst, where there are a lot of Tebbit and Junor-like folk.
Did you know that John Junor was once a Liberal candidate?
He always wrote about Auchtermuchty in his Sunday Express days. I see that he lived there and was therefore a constituent of Ming´s

Sir Menzies Campbell MP said:
“This is a stupendous result for the Liberal Democrats in one of the safest Conservative seats in the country. It shows that there is no confidence in Cameron’s Tories in the Conservative heartlands.
“Together with the results in Wales there has been a complete rejection of the Labour government following upon the Liberal Democrat success in Dunfermline earlier this year. "

Thank you for that snippet of info on Sir John Junor. Of course I knew that he often harked on about the "lads in Auchtermuchty" etc etc but I didn't realise he lived there and it was in Ming's constituency.
