"Racist" Tory Councillor is Cameron supporter

The Guardian is running a story on the suspension of a conservative councillor who sent around a racist poem. "Old style tory dinosaur" you might think...you´d be wrong.

The Guardian article is pretty brief. A Tory councillor has been suspended )pretty promptly) after sending a racist e-mail to fellow conservative councillors. It tells you that there is a little more to Cllr Ellenor Bland than this - she was a Conservative candidate in Swansea East at the last election (the Guardian descibes her as having been a PPC, but it seems that she actually fought the seat).

You could think this is par for the course. These things happen - and we know that the Tories have their unreconstructed, tombstone-like wing.

But find your way to This is Wiltshire and you'll find that she is in fact a thoroughly modern, Cameron-supporting Tory.

"I am a firm supporter of David Cameron's policies...If I wasn't a supporter of David Cameron I certainly would not be a conservative.

"This e-mail has been circulating for years and I forwarded it in a harmless, not racist or malicious, way and it has come back and blown up in my face."

This was going to be a busy week for Ellenor Bland. She is opening her new shop, Sophisticatz on Saturday. Perhaps she should have another think about the name...

Hmmm, I think that your slant on this is unreasonable - the poem has nothing to do with Cameron and her quote is not even real evidence of being a Cameron supporter. She is (or was) a Councillor and candidate and it is therefore no great surprise that she is trying to paint herself as a wronged modern candidate rather than a tombstone dinosaur type.

A more reasonable judgement on the Conservative Party over this issue is not to link it to the leader but to note the reaction of the e-base who are largely supportive of Bland and typically annoyed at Dave for the criticisms aimed at her and her suspension - http://conservativehome.blogs.com/goldlist/2006/11/candidate_suspe.html

It appears to me that some LDs seem too zealous to run with the "Dave is a fraud" line when it would be truer (and equally advantageous) to show that no matter how hard Dave may try to drag them into centrist and occasional liberal territory, they're still the same old Tories behind the snazzy green oak tree.

I think that is the argument above.

I made the point that suspension had taken place rather quickly, for example...
