Having a message and sticking to it.

Back in the 1980s I remember comparing our attempt at running a local election campaign at national level with the Labour effort. Our (Liberal Party) campaign talked about how good our councillors were going to be. The Labour Party focussed their national campaign on the NHS.

Of course the NHS did not have much to do with local government, but ot did have a lot to do with what v9ters were concerned with - and talking about it clearly helped the Labour Party reinforce there pro-public service image.

So I am pleased that we are linking the WeCanCutCrime campaign to the locals - and to what Liberal Democrats in local government have achieved. We need to fight the lie that Lib dems don't care about crime.

We even seem to be able to link the theme to Leader's visits (for example, this trip to Woking.

The 5 steps are good . and I like the black-and-white site, which is serious, urgent, and easy to read.

Where we come up short is on soundbites and slogans though. Maybe they are in the pipeline somewhere. Also I can't see a link from Home Office Watch to we can cut crime, which struck me as a bit odd.

In the meantime, I found a podcast interview with Nick Clegg on the IPPR website. It's worth a listen.
